Quartzsite Feb. 23rd

Our stay at Gunsight Wash came to an end, we really enjoyed our time there, so did Jack. He especially liked the big Mesquite tree. Final sun set there. Our intention was to head back to Ajo and stay in a RV park for a couple of days. The park we chose had no vacancies. As it was early we decided to head for Gila Bend, there is a nice park there that we have stayed in before. Well, we missed the turn and were heading for Maricopa and, not having been on that road before, we continued on. Lots of farm land around there and the town is very new, with lots of building going on. The bad part was, this route took us through Phoenix at rush hour. Having endured that, Buckeye was the next town to try for a place to stay. No luck, full, OK, back to Gila Bend. Sonoran Desert RV Park had a space for one night. That is the RV park we had intended to stay at three hours earlier. OH, well, it's only fuel, we had the time.  We are now back in Quartzsite. We will stay here till we go to Apache Ju...

Gunsight Wash, Why March 15th

Image
Yikes, Wed. night Thurs. morning it got down to -2C and only up to 13C in the afternoon. It is warming back up every day this week, though. Gunsight Wash is about 13 miles from Ajo and 3 miles from Why. There is not much in Why, a service station, restaurant and I think a Casino, will check that out today. By that, I mean a drive by. It is very nice here but the roads are not very clear. It is easy to get on to a dead end but we found a spot and set up camp. As we were looking a couple was going for a walk and stopped to chat. We told them we were new to this area and were trying to figure out the lay of the land. They said just pick a spot that looks nice and you're all set. Pat says, we are trying to make sure that we are not close to any Class A's. Oh, why, cause they have built in loud generators. That's when we realized that they had a class A. That's how you attract friends, lol. Our campsite with a beautiful Mesquite tree. Sunset the first night. We went back to ...

Ajo Feb. 9th

It's about a three and a half hour drive from Yuma to Ajo and the BLM that we wanted to stay in. We found a nice spot and settled down. Ajo is known as the birth place of copper mining in Arizona. There is an open pit and huge tailing mounds. We drove through town and turned onto Darby Wells Rd. If you carry on, that road does a loop and goes back to the beginning of Ajo, a nice scenic drive. We spotted Ray's rig from Love Your RV parked about a couple of miles from our location. Only the second  Utuber we have noticed on our travels. It was very pretty and quiet, a bit dusty though, neighbours no closer than a hundred meters. For the most part the weather was nice but a cool breeze, so we did not spend too much time outside. The view from our window. This is what the inside of a Saguaro looks like. Next, we took a drive down to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. We had driven both loops last time we were down but it is so scenic, we drove it again. I did not take a lot of...

Tumco Feb. 2nd

The Red Earth Casino is back down the Box Canyon road near the Salton Sea. A good place to dump and fill. $10.00  It was still early in the afternoon but we decided to check out the RV parking. It was spacious and fairly level paved parking lot. Allstays said RV parking was free. so we decided to stay the night. It was well after lunch time, so we decided to see what food the casino had to offer. There was a Cantina style restaurant that offered Mexican and American food. We ordered Mexican, good choice, it was very good.  I went to ask the gal at the fuel counter what we had to do to stay in their RV part, she said $20.00 please. Kind of shocked, I paid up. Walked through the casino and spent $20.00 each on the slot machines. Next morning, Pat wanted to buy some milk, so she decided to ask about the $20.00. The manager said that the website needed to be corrected and we got our $20.00 back, we are happy now. A BLM off of Ogilby Rd was our next destination, it is close t...

Painted Canyon Feb. 1st

Wind, wind, wind, all I can say is, I hate wind. It started Jan. 30th and did not stop till Feb. 1st. We just stayed at camp and read Jan. 31st. Yesterday we took a drive back down the Box Canyon Rd. Just as the road comes into the valley, there is the Painters Canyon Rd. They warn you that it is a 4X4 road, maybe at some time of the year but not now. Any car could make it. A dusty drive along the base of the mountain, then you head up into the canyon. There is a slot canyon at the trailhead. Little over five mile hike around the loop. It is called the Ladder Canyon Trail because there are ladders to climb up and down on the trail. When we were a little younger, we might have considered it. The canyon itself is very scenic, so all was not lost.  The beginning of the Canyon. At the trailhead. Looking into Ladder Canyon Trail Some random shots in the canyon. There is a hole in the rock below. Feb. 2nd. Our time here is about done, we will be heading east, thinking of trying out Red E...
