Gunsight Wash, Why March 15th

Yikes, Wed. night Thurs. morning it got down to -2C and only up to 13C in the afternoon. It is warming back up every day this week, though.

Gunsight Wash is about 13 miles from Ajo and 3 miles from Why. There is not much in Why, a service station, restaurant and I think a Casino, will check that out today. By that, I mean a drive by. It is very nice here but the roads are not very clear. It is easy to get on to a dead end but we found a spot and set up camp. As we were looking a couple was going for a walk and stopped to chat. We told them we were new to this area and were trying to figure out the lay of the land. They said just pick a spot that looks nice and you're all set. Pat says, we are trying to make sure that we are not close to any Class A's. Oh, why, cause they have built in loud generators. That's when we realized that they had a class A. That's how you attract friends, lol.

Our campsite with a beautiful Mesquite tree.

Sunset the first night.
We went back to Ajo to shop and to further check out the mine. The mine closed in 1985 due to falling copper prices. It was the second largest in Arizona and third in the US.

There is a lake at the bottom that you can see from Google Earth. There is no accessible place to view the lake. It is about one hundred feet deep and spring fed, evaporation keeps it at equilibrium.

Next day we went back to Organ Pipe Cactus N. M. to do the Ajo Mountain Drive. It is on the East side of hwy 85, going to Mexico. This drive is way prettier than the west side, the west side is worth doing though.

A few random photos from the loop.

We will be here for a couple of days or so, then head back to Quartzsite.

I am writing this around noon and it is up to 19C The wind is still blowing, so no sitting outside . Not hard like before, just annoying. It was around 8C last night. This is our 23rd campsite since we left home and won't be our last!
